SMUT Runs Cottonwood

SMUT took to Cottonwood last Saturday for a great group run with absolutely perfect weather.  The seven of us met at the Late Night Trailhead at 8am.  Pictured below from left to right are Josh Brimhall, Shad Mickelberry, Dave Pauwelyn, Ashlee Mickelberry, Shawn Wallace, and Eric Swenson.

From Late Night Trailhead Eric Swenson led the group out to Black Velvet running towards the Red Rock cliffs eventually turning north and down into the valley.  Lots of beautiful scenery and open singletrack to Black Velvet Road.  After some discussion, Josh, Shad, Ashlee, Dave, and Joe Maylish descended down to the town of Blue Diamond.  Eric & Shawn headed back in and got in a nice 10 mile loop.  In Blue Diamond we refilled our water bottles at McGhie's Bike Outpost just over 9 miles from the Late Night Parking Lot. Then it was time to climb, ascending up a 665ft climb in 1.6 miles to the Hurl.  From the top of the Hurl you can see all of the Vegas Valley to the left, and Red Rock to the right.  Then it was 400ft of descent to the valley floor where Josh, Shad, and Ashlee took off back towards Black Velvet.  This portion of the valley is a steady gradual uphill climb of nearly 500ft.  Dave & I ran back towards Black Velvet Road, and from there ran 3 miles back in to the Late Night Trail Head completing 18 miles.

Several of us have races coming up this spring.  Eric Swenson is preparing for the Sean O'Brien 50 Mile.  Shad Mickelberry Angeles Crest 100, Ashlee Mickelberry Leona Divide 50 Mile, Josh Brimhall is running Sean O'Brien 50 Mile, Pemberton 50k, and Moab 33k, all in February.  Joe Maylish Moab Red Hot 55k.
